I often justify my costlier wardrobe purchases by thinking about them in terms of cost per wear. I’ll say to myself, if I buy that dress from Reformation for £200, and then I wear it 20 times this summer, is it worth it? If it makes me really happy each time I slip into it, then yes. This red dress, however, is not one of those purchases, because it cost all of £5, and so it’s cost per wear is probably about 5p.

This dress was yet another score from the Hackney Flea Market. It was originally much longer – coming midway down my calves – so I busted out the travel sewing kit and shortened it myself. The shape needed improvement too, which is where the belt comes in. Goes to show that a £5 vintage dress only needs a little sprinkling of finishing touches to be lifted up in a big way.
